The Canon EOS
50D Digital SLR camera is really a newer version of the
exceptionally highly recommended Canon EOS 40D Digital SLR
but with some new changes.
Like its
predecessor it has a magnesium alloy body. The EOS 50D is built
very sturdily for any demanding use you may call on it for. Due
to its magnesium alloy body though it is very lightweight.
The new improved 3
inch VGA LCD, 920,000 dot screen is a pleasure to watch with its
almost perfect clarity even in bright sunlight and allows you to
easily check the focus and clarity of your image. In Live View
Mode it is very easy to photograph things at awkward angles.
If you are looking
for exceptionally detailed and low noise images, the Canon
Eos 50D Digital SLR delivers. Its 15.1 Megapixel CMOS sensor
makes it the ideal camera for the creative photographer involved
in large scale reproduction or cropping of photos. Throughout
the ISO range, its light gathering capability is enhanced due to
redesigned pixels with gapless micro lenses.
Most of my
children are into sport and for me this was where the EOS 50D
came into its element. I filmed my kids in action shots at a
football match and the results were unbelievable due to its
continuous burst facility of 6.3.frames a second.

The Canon 50D
EOS SLR is equipped with the very powerful Digic 4
processing engine and in conjunction with the CMOS sensor
produces 14-bit image processing making all colours very natural
with really smooth gradations. The Digic 4 processor also means
that the EOS 50D has a start up time that is virtually instant.
Once you have taken the picture it also allows you to review it
very quickly.
With ISO speeds of
up to 3200 (expandable to an amazing 12,800) shooting in low
light is a breeze for this camera.
As with the EOS
40D the EOS 50D features Live View. This feature
allows you to frame your images accurately when it is
impractical to use the viewfinder. When using the dedicated Live
View button you will see real time images on the LCD screen. In
Live View there are three types of Auto Focus. Quick AF, Live AF
and the new Face Detection Live AF. I could not believe
this feature when I tried it out as it automatically focuses on
any faces detected in the frame.
Live View mode
allows users to accurately frame images when using the
viewfinder is impractical. The dedicated Live View button
displays real-time images on the LCD, offering three types of
auto focus: Quick AF, Live AF, and new Face Detection Live AF,
which focuses based on faces detected in the frame.
9 Cross type
points are employed by the Canon EOS 50D SLR's high precision AF
system to enable very accurate focussing, whether on the
vertical or horizontal plane. For the more technically minded,
sensitivity of up to f/2.8 is achievable and off centre subjects
are accommodated better due to points being spread out across
the AF frames.
The Canon EOS 50D
incorporates what Canon call its "EOS Integrated Cleaning
System" or EICS for short. They have combined special component
materials which reduce the actual generation of dust with a
fluorine coating on the low pass filter which actually repels
dust. It also features what is called a Self Cleaning
Sensor Unit which shakes dust free when you power the EOS 50D up
or down.
If like me you
already have various Canon add ons and accessories already i can
put your mind at rest by telling you that the Canon EOS 50D
Digital SLR camera is fully compatible with over 60 of the EF or
EF-S lenses and all EX series Speedlite flash units

DIGITAL SLR CAMERA
FINAL APPRAISAL
FOR: Well built and
light. Excellent quality pictures. Fast shutter speeds for
action photos
AGAINST: Quite
expensive unless you are a keen photographer and as with the EOS
40D it looks quite big and bulky, not the prettiest looking
camera.
All in all though I would
have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending this camera. I
also tried the Nikon 90D and whilst the Nikon has the latest
video system as well built in I still felt the overall quality
and features of the Canon EOS 50D was better value for money and
if I want video I buy a video camera, horses for courses.
